Exercise is medicine

Physical inactivity is a fast-growing public health problem in this country and contributes to a variety of chronic diseases and health complications. In response, a new program has been launched by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the American Medical Association.

“Exercise is Medicine” is a nationally recognized program. The ACSM has constructed a new web site that contains educational materials and tool-kits for physicians and other health care providers to use in their practices.

From this, educational models will be developed for use in medical schools, medical students early in their careers will learn the importance of exercise for avoiding illness and disease. Exercise may well be the best medicine of all. Hopefully tomorrows physicians will pass this message on to their patients instead of just handing out a prescription.

Here's hoping.
